Machado, photographer argentino, blamed the singer’s exhaustive preparation for the remarkable duration of the session. Cher studied the photographer’s work on social media before arriving, selected specific images as references, and asked that their aesthetic guide the new production. The references included portraits of Dolores Fonzi, Araceli González and Natalia Oreiro.

The visual references were more than casual suggestions. In a campaign with Fonzi, the team recreated stones and objects used in the original shoot. Machado explained that everything was assembled based on what Cher was seeing on the studio’s Instagram and Facebook pages, a process that turned the shoot into a careful reconstruction of the references.

Una consulta de las cuatro de la mañana

Around four in the morning, Cher left the dressing room carrying part of the wardrobe and a wig. She wanted to check with the photographer before continuing, and Machado remembered her asking, “Am I okay like this?” The singer paid attention to every detail and treated the crew warmly throughout the long working day.

“From ten in the morning until nine, I swear on my children. A whole day.”Gabriel Machado

The collaboration also produced the covers of two albums. In Closer to the Truth, released in 2013, Cher appeared blonde, dressed in white and reclining on a bed. For Dancing Queen, her 2018 tribute to ABBA, the cover brought together two profiles of the artist, one with dark hair and the other blonde.

The professional relationship had an unexpected consequence. When Machado and his longtime partner José Cicala needed recommendation letters for an extraordinary visa to the United States, Cher wrote them by hand. The letter praised the photographers’ work and described her professional experience with them, providing the support required for the application.

Machado and Cicala founded the Machado Cicala studio, which worked with figures such as Al Pacino, Kate Moss and John Travolta. The photographer also recalled a session with Moss in which the model expected to meet the energetic photographer she had known during an earlier assignment. The anecdote shows how demanding those days could be, even for subjects accustomed to the camera.

Machado’s work with Argentine actresses such as Fonzi, González and Oreiro became a reference for Cher’s own aesthetic. The most striking detail is not the length of the session, but the level of preparation: the singer arrived with a clear idea of the images she wanted to use as a starting point and checked the result at every stage. Machado’s recollection is that Cher was attentive and warm throughout, a combination he summarized simply: “A love.”
